Commission Portrait Process
To begin the portrait process, the artist
and client work closely to determine the mood, size and background elements of
the portrait. The subject’s clothing and where the final portrait is to hang
will also be discussed. Posthumous portraits will require a photo
review.
During the initial meeting, the artist will
explore poses of the subject in various gestures and lighting conditions.
Preliminary sketches will be made from the artist’s observations. Whenever
possible, an oil head study from life will be created, providing a valuable
reference tool for the artist. Detailed photo reference will also be obtained.
Depending on the complexity of the
portrait, this initial process takes place in one or two sittings, each lasting
about two hours.
From these materials, the artist will
return to her studio to generate a color composition sketch for the client’s
approval. Upon consent, the artist will begin painting the portrait. If
possible, she may request additional sittings from life to aid in the
portrait’s completion. Delivery is arranged upon completion and client
approval.
The artist feels that all finished works
should be unveiled to the client framed so she is happy to provide a frame that
is aesthetically appropriate.
